Doyle’s Motel – Hotel Bar Soap – Camay

“Church of the Holy Comforter”

I happened to be scouring the internet yesterday for the last few remaining pharmacy lunch counters, and there are so few of them, maybe it’s time to give up. I saw four. In the country. Maybe some are so old-fashioned they lack all internet presence? Anyway, one of them was in Alabama—what are the odds? Next thing you know, I’ll get a job offer in Alabama. This is another hotel bar soap, a nostalgic smelling little bar of Camay, and it’s from Doyle’s Motel in Gadsden, Alabama. On back it says: “One Stop Service. Restaurant MOTEL Service Station. Air Conditioned.” Long gone, I’m afraid—but the good thing is, the wrapper also includes the address: 632 Broad St. —so we can see what’s there now. As you might expect, it’s in the heart of the downtown of this medium sized city. What’s there now? “Cosmic Debris”—to my delight. Vinyl! They also sell stoner T-shirts, crystals, sage, hemp chocolate, bongs, etc., you get the picture. Right next door to TUT Hookah Lounge. Across the street from Daugette Towers, the place to be in Gadsden (10 floors, swimming pool, massage therapist). And the old Pitman Theater, which appears to be a music and event venue, now. Music store, museums, all within blocks. Diners? A place called The Choice looks promising—even open on Sundays (after church). Though… people seem to prefer making art out of their food there—not sure I approve of that.
