The Year in Review
/THIS MEMO is a reprint of today’s Substack (Love Me Avenue) post, titled: The Year in Review. Happy New Year from the entire editorial staff of R.Speen.com!
The Year in Review. Favorite thing I did: finish and publish my book, Around Desire—I’d recommend it! As far as what I discovered—favorite book: Skippy Bedelle by Owen Johnson (1922); favorite record: Skeeter Davis & NRBQ “She Sings, They Play” (1985); favorite “movie”: Twin Peaks: The Return (2017); favorite soap: Savon de Marseille – 72% D’Huile Lait D’Anesse (Donkey Milk Soap); favorite sparkling water: (TIE) Jelly Belly – Chocolate (discontinued) and Waterloo – All Day Rosé (discontinued). Except for Twin Peaks, you can find my reviews on RSPEEN.COM – plus, much, much more. Next year, I’m going to try to get back to reviewing other things, but we’ll see. First of all, I have to find a way to get back to actually writing back to people.
The Substack experiment was a failure, on my end, but interesting no less. At least I didn’t accept a lot of paid subscriptions and now find myself ducking into doorways from the people I owe money to. I also failed to read as many Substack posts from other people—there is so much good stuff, it quickly became overwhelming. But I’ll keep trying, and I might find a new approach for posting, as well—we’ll see—if I do, I’ll continue to copy them on the Memo page of the R. Speen. I wish good health for all in 2026. I’m going to start some new projects, but I’ll keep them to myself so as not be as embarrassed if they fizzle out. But here is one, and it’s a solemn, giddy promise: I’m not going to start drinking again, but I am going to finish renovating my ventriloquist dummy, give him a new name, and then we’re going to hit the comedy clubs—if they’ll have us, that is.
