Monty Kelly “(I Loves You) Porgy” / “Tango Bongo”

The romantic strains of Gershwin’s “(I Loves You) Porgy” (a standard, from Porgy and Bess) fills the room, and it occurs to me, as it sometimes does, that someone lived here before I did, and someone will live here after I don’t live here anymore. I recognize this song—probably from Nina Simone, though I don’t remember for sure—it’s ingrained in the ol’ grey matter. This is an upbeat, pop version from bandleader, Monty Kelly—instrumental and a little jazzed up—the musicians uncredited. Well, it’s 45, with no cover, just passed down through the generations, since 1959, anyway, the year before I was born, which means, I guess, someone was drawing up some plans for my life, possibly over wine or cocktails and the emotional melody of this very record. No one would have guessed I’d be playing it in 2059, and it sounds just a heart-bending—scratchy but vivid. I had very few records when I was a little kid, but one of them was “In the Year 2525” (Zager & Evans) —which still might play perfectly in the year 2525 (if man is still alive) and sell for $1 on eBay. The “B” side (of Porgy) sounds every bit the B-Side, an original called “Tango Bongo” (long before there was an energy drink by that name). It makes me feel like I’m in a movie, but only for two minutes and 34 seconds, or the time it takes you to thank the uncredited percussionists on this track while shotgunning a can of sparkling caffeine, taurine, panax, BCCAAs, guarana, creatine, CoQ10, THC, and Dew infused Tango Bongo!
