Two Brothers

4625 W. Burnham St., West Milwaukee, WI

Possibly the geographic center of the world, or at least the diner-world, Two Brothers is the most classic “diner-in-a-house” you’ll come across, and it’s in the heart of West Milwaukee on an otherwise desolate triangle of nothingness where W. Burnham intersects the snaking W. Electric Ave. in a brutal square few miles of functional, treeless, industrial land-use, that has long since given up on aesthetics, if even beauty had ever been a consideration. One big room with a small diner counter, a few booths and tables, a waitress from the waitress hall of fame, and plastic menu from the Smithsonian. A lot of specials on a dry-erase board in multicolored ink. I ordered a “Denver Skillet” because it’s the most average, meaningless, generic, uninteresting, safe, dependable, delicious breakfast there is. Plus, you can’t get it in heaven. Open every day from 6AM to 2PM—which takes first place in the easy-to-remember sweepstakes. If I lived at “Rooms for Rent” (aka the El Dorado) on Burnham, I’d be here every day until the money ran out. 9 and three-quarters stars (just because 10 is not possible in the world-of-10). All right?
