Al Wadi Coffee House – 200 W. Layton Ave., Milwaukee

A relatively new place, out by the airport, one of the many Middle Eastern and Yemeni coffee shops in town—which, judging by the coffee I’ve tried at a few, are setting standards (or raising the bar?) for deliciousness, coffee-wise. There’s an extensive and intriguing coffee (and food) menu, but I just tried “Royal Arabic Coffee,” and it was the best cup of coffee I’ve had in a while. It also made me consider always putting cardamom in coffee I make at home—why don’t I do that? The place looks fantastic—it’s huge, really nicely lit and decorated, and feels comfortable. If I lived near the airport, in an apartment complex populated by flight attendants, as is my fantasy, I might hang out there. It’s open late, midnight most nights—it would be an excellent place to meet with someone. Lately, I haven’t been spending much time in coffee shops—a lot of them bum me out—but if I lived near this place I might make a point of it—and try everything on the menu within the bounds of my dietary tolerance. The vibes would take care of the rest.
